Dolphins and Seabirds watching in Algarve

The Dolphin Watching and Marine Life boat tours started this summer and departure from Olhão.

We went out this weekend for marine life observation. The day was cloudy, but it turns out to be a great tour!

A large group of bottlenose dolphins was seen along the Ria Formosa Natural Park, as well as several sea birds!

Common dolphins, gannets, storm petrel and shearwaters are all are also possible to find in this boat tour!

Male Golden orioles (Oriolus oriolus) are spectacularly colorful but the distinctive character permits us to identify them by their songs.

The adult male is unmistakably, startlingly yellow apart from jet black wings and tail and a blood red beak. The female and male juveniles are greener and streaked below, distinctive enough when seen perched, but having similar colors to a Green Woodpecker in flight.

Their diet consist mainly in invertebrates, fruits and berries. The prefer deciduous woodland areas to dwell. Eurasian golden oriole is distributed all around Europe and Asia, except for the northern areas.

It’s a migratory species that arrives in Portugal at the end of April/ beginning of May and leaves at the end of August. You can find them in several birding spots in Serra do Caldeirão or Monchique.

Trip Report – boat tour with ALFA

We went out for a Bird Watching and Photography activity on 20th February. Blue sky, but cold temperature of 17ºC and special guests: photographers from ALFA- association of photographers of the Algarve.

We spent the morning on a bout tour in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, going out of Olhão until Deserta.

The boat tour was more dedicated to capture images and to undserstand the bio-geography of the islands.

During the morning we made a stop in Culatra Island. A hot coffee and breakfast where welcome.

“Boat tour for bird watching and workshop of black and white photography”

Natura Algarve is organizing a boat tour for birding and capture pictures. During the afternoon there will be a practical exercise on the photography lab and you can work your own photos. The day will end with a barbecue.
